Now Comes the Night

In this world premiere, American journalist Michael Après has been released after being held hostage for 18 months in Iraq. Michael’s close colleague and friend, however, begins to suspect that Michael isn’t free yet. An explosive television interview puts their friendship to the test as secrets, lies, and betrayals haunt both men. When one last opportunity to be a hero presents itself; they are determined to take it. But at what cost?

This world premiere production by award-winning playwright E. M. Lewis is 1st Stage’s exciting contribution to the 2015 Women’s Voices Theater Festival.

Harvey

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this beloved classic is a treat for the whole family. Elwood P. Dowd insists on including his friend Harvey in all of his sister Veta’s social gatherings. The trouble is Harvey is an imaginary six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall rabbit. This funny, charming, touching play challenges us to embrace our imaginations and at all costs to resist being “perfectly normal human beings.”

When the Rain Stops Falling

Named the best new play of 2010 by TIME Magazine, When the Rain Stops Falling is a monumental piece of theatre, epic in scope and poetic in language and imagery. This compelling family saga alternates in time (from 1953 to 2039) and place (from London to Australia). Encompassing four generations of fathers and sons and their mothers, lovers, and wives, the play is sweeping yet extraordinarily intimate. A riveting mystery that weaves its way through time and across oceans, the play is a “metaphor for the impossibility of escaping the past, for the way we are all shaped by what came before—and are living in the shadow of what comes next.” —TIME Magazine.

Proof

Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Proof tells the story of Catherine, a troubled young woman, on the eve of her 25th birthday. Catherine has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must uncomfortably confront various non-mathematical problems including her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, her father’s former student who hopes to discern meaning from the 103 chaotic notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious new notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: how much of her father’s madness—or genius—will she inherit?
